Have you ever looked at your child struggling to hold a crayon, use scissors, or button a jacket and wondered, “Shouldn't they be doing this by now?”
You’re not alone — many parents and teachers quietly worry about fine motor skills.

The truth is, every child builds these skills at their own pace. Some kids pinch, stack, and draw naturally. Others need more time, encouragement, and hands-on play. And that’s okay. Little hands grow strong through everyday moments, not pressure.
Things like threading pasta onto yarn, clipping pictures. drawing lines, sorting buttons, rolling playdough, or stacking cups. These are all easy, open-ended tasks that help kids build confidence without even realizing they’re “working.”

This month, we've put together a Fine Motor Skills Challenge with nine kid-friendly activities you can try at home or in the classroom. Each activity has a picture-based instruction sheet so even your youngest learners can follow along independently.

If you’d like learn more and find ideas, like videos, websites, printable sheets, or ways to help your child at different stages, visit our STEM Learning Page. It’s packed with simple resources for parents, homeschool families, and early educators.

Fine motor growth doesn’t have to be complicated. A little play, a little exploration, and a lot of encouragement go a long way.
You’re doing better than you think — and your child is, too.
